Landrace Strains

Landrace Strains

All modern pot has its roots in the landrace strains of the world; the native, indigenous or heirloom cannabis strains found on every continent of the planet. A landrace strain is pure, never crossed and always grown in its natural environment: this isolation and the resulting inbreeding means these varieties are highly stable and extremely vigorous. It was only a generation or two ago that, were you talking about marijuana at all, it was one of these pure strains; you might know them from family stories of the travelling days, sampling all there was to be had on the hippy trail. In these days of maxed-out, super-modern hybrids, with outlandish strength, yield, colors and flavors pushed to the forefront of breeding culture it can be important to remember where this whole thing started. After years of commercial breeding efforts being fixated on producing stronger, high-THC plants, much of the industry's focus has now switched to creating medical marijuana with greater variety of cannabinoids. Some breeders and consumers have begun questioning the breadth of the available genetic pool which has lost a lot of its potentially beneficial characteristics along the way. To that end, there's no where better to look for those interesting 'new' characteristics than the landrace strains which all weed we use is originally from - they are a priceless repository of the original genetics we lost along the way.
