When it comes to cannabis, there is no such thing as knowing it all. Contrary to the claims of many cannabis connoisseurs, there’s always a ton to learn about this incredible plant.
Admittedly, some of the pearls of wisdom you hear along the way are more useful than others. Nevertheless, you can’t consider yourself to be a true part of the cannabis community without a few fun facts at your disposal.
So with this in mind, what follows is a brief rundown of 14 fun facts about cannabis – some of which you probably hadn’t heard until now:
1.First up, Bill Gates has joined forces with a bunch of entrepreneurs to create a ‘doomsday vault’ for the protection of various plant seeds, should Armageddon strike. Rumour has it there’s a good supply of cannabis seeds in there, too!
2.If the Federal government went ahead and legalised cannabis, the American economy would benefit from around $9 billion every year in taxes alone. Money desperately needed to fund healthcare, education and so on.
3.While combining cannabis with alcohol is rarely a good idea, weed and beer are part of the same family. Beer hops and cannabis coming from the same group of plants and sharing relatively similar genetics.
4.Contrary to popular belief, Colorado wasn’t the first state in North America to legalise cannabis for personal use. It’s been legal in Alaska since 1975 and nothing has changed over the past 40 years.
5.Despite being one of the world’s most secretive and brutal states, cannabis is 100% legal in North Korea. It isn’t even considered a drug and is routinely smoked by members of the military as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.
6.California recently became one of the first states to legalise recreational cannabis in North America. Interestingly, California was also the first state in North America to prohibit the sale, purchase and use of cannabis around 100 years ago.
7.A military-grade synthetic cannabis substitute was created by the U.S. Army in 1949. Legend has it that Dimethylheptylpyran was so strong that just a tiny dose could get you high and keep you high for up to 72 hours.
8.Uruguay remains the only country where cannabis is completely ‘legal’ in the full sense of the word. They’d rather focus on tackling more prominent problems, therefore enforce little to no restrictions on the cultivation, sale and general use of cannabis.
9.The official cannabis expert for the United States government during the fifties and sixties once stated under oath that he experimented with pot and it turned him into a bat. That’s not a misprint – a bat!
10.Right now, there are three times as many legal recreational cannabis outlets in Colorado as there are Starbucks locations.
11.Ironically, the first recorded arrest in the United States for the possession of cannabis happened in Denver, all the way back in 1937.
12.The history of cannabis use dates way back, with pot having been found in in ancient Chinese tomb as old as 2,700 years.
13.Back in 1971, the first item sold and purchased using a rudimentary version of the Internet was a bag of weed. The transaction apparently taking place between a group of MIT students and Stanford students.
14.Contrary to popular belief, cannabis is still illegal in Jamaica. Unless you’re part of the Rastafarian religion or have a medical marijuana card (which is pretty easy to obtain), you’re out of the running as you would be anywhere else!
