It’s a topic we’ve covered once or twice before, but nonetheless warrants revisiting. Worldwide, the total volume of cannabis stems thrown in the trash every day is staggering. Not to mention, impossible to accurately calculate. Nevertheless, every cannabis stem that finds its way into the garbage represents a painful waste of pot.
You’ve invested time, energy and money in a cannabis cultivation project at home. You’ve produced decent results and completed the harvest, only to then go and discard the stems. And in doing so, unwittingly toss out something of significant value.
Contrary to popular belief, there’s a lot that can be done with cannabis stems. They might not be as potent or flavourful as the flowers they support, but they’re still packed with precious cannabinoids and invaluable compounds.
So, rather than tossing out a prime part of your cannabis plants, consider using your stems in the following ways instead:
Use the Stems to Make Tea
Cannabis tea is reputed to have a wide variety of therapeutic properties. Even if it doesn’t get you baked in the normal sense, it could definitely do you some good. Best of all, making cannabis tea using nothing more than the stems of your cannabis plants really couldn’t be easier.
It’s simply a case of toasting the stems in a preheated oven for 15 minutes at 100° C, before turning up the heat to 120° for 45 minutes. These decarboxylated stems can then be ground to a course consistency, before simmering them in water for around 15 minutes. Strain the liquid and use it to make whatever hot drink you like, with an added kick from the compounds extracted from your cannabis stems.
Make Cannabis Vodka
Even easier than the above method, you can also make your own cannabis infused vodka. Start with the same decarboxylation process again, though in this instance simply break the stems into smaller strands - rather than grinding them.Place them in a suitable jar or bottle, before pouring the required quantity of vodka (or your preferred spirit) and sealing it.
Place the container in a cool and dark location for a minimum of a week, shaking it on a daily basis. The longer you leave it, the more cannabis will infuse into the resulting mixture. Strain the liquid to remove any bits and pieces that break off from the stems and store your DIY cannabis vodka in a suitable container indefinitely.
Last but not least, cannabis butter is by far the most versatile ingredient in the cannabis cookbook. With a batch of cannabutter, you can add a serious ‘poke’ to pretty much any recipe or everyday snack imaginable.
With this method, there’s no need to decarboxylate the stems, as you’ll be cooking them anyway. Grind the stems to a course consistency and place them in a saucepan with equal amounts of butter and water. Bring to a gentle simmer and leave to do their thing for a couple of hours. When the mixture has reduced its volume by 50%, the water will have evaporated and the infusion is complete.Strain the mixture, pour it into a mould and cool it in the refrigerator.
With cannabis stems, a little creativity goes a long way. However, it is inadvisable to attempt to smoke cannabis stems, however desperate you find yourself. Stems consist primarily of inactive plant matter, which doesn’t have nearly the kind of potency necessary to get you high.
Instead, you simply risk doing a number on your airways and lungs, followed by a splitting headache to round off the experience!
