The Hidden Value of AVB

The Hidden Value of AVB

By Lisa Mortown

Even if you don’t know what AVB is, there’s a good chance you’re producing and discarding a fair amount of it on a daily basis. AVB stands for “already vaped bud” - an underappreciated cannabis byproduct that has more than its fair share of practical applications.

When you vaporise cannabis flowers, the device applies just the right amount of heat to extract as much of the bud’s THC content as possible. But it’s nonetheless worth noting that there isn’t a commercial vaporiser on the planet that can provide total THC extraction.

As a result, the spent bud you’re left with - aka your AVB - may still have a fair amount of THC in it.

Of course, the potency and usefulness of the AVB will be determined by a variety of factors. Examples of which include the original potency of the cannabis, the temperature it was heated to by the vaporiser and so on.Nevertheless, there’s almost always some CBD and THC left behind.

So for those who see themselves as economical, industrious and efficient, here are just a few suggestions as to how to tap into the hidden value of your AVB:

1. Use it to make edibles
Right off the bat, this is exactly the kind of stuff you can and should be using in your next batch of edibles. Feel free to use top-shelf bud in your proudest culinary creations, but don’t let your AVB go to waste, either. For one thing, it’s already been decarboxylated, so it’s ready to use in any recipe you can think of.Grind it down and add it to your favourite soups, sauces and stews, or maybe knock up a batch of cannabis butter.

2. Cannabis crumbles
If you simply cannot be bothered getting creative in the kitchen, there’s no need to go to extremes to make use of your AVB. Once again, as this spent plant matter is already decarboxylated, you don’t necessarily have to cook it at all.You could simply grind it up, stick it in a small jar and add your very own cannabis crumbles to anything and everything you eat. They’re not necessarily the most flavorful additions to a decadent dinner, but it’s a small price to pay for what’s technically a ‘free’ buzz.

3. Cannabis capsules
This is by far one of the best ways of putting ‘waste’ cannabis to use, given that you don’t have to worry about the flavour or texture of the contents. It’s simply a case of grinding your ABV to a relatively fine consistency and loading it into a bunch of empty capsules. Pop a pill every time you need a little pick-me-up, assessing the potency and general properties of your cannabis capsules as you go. Great for taking out and about, cannabis capsules are the epitome of discretion and have a near-limitless shelf life when properly stored.

4. Teas and coffees
Ridiculously easy and surprisingly effective, you could always simply toss your AVB in with your tea leaves or coffee grounds and brew in the normal way. The resulting mixture will certainly be unlike anything you’ve tasted before, but guarantees a buzz that goes beyond bog standard caffeine.

5. Smoke it…if you’re desperate
Last up, the answer to the obvious question is yes - you can technically smoke AVB a second time. Though whether or not you should is open to debate. There’s THC and CBD in there to be extracted and smoking is indeed a viable option. The only downside being that the resulting smoke will be harsh, unpleasant and about us flavourful as an unwashed bong. It’s up to you whether you give it a try, but it’s a last-resort measure to turn to out of pure desperation alone.
