Northern Lights Strain
Northern Lights Cannabis Strains
One of the most iconic weeds of all-time, the Northern Lights strain has become no less than a global superpower among the cannabis community. NL has built the kind of fame and reputation where even if you’ve never tried it, you’ve heard about it dozens of times. And if you haven’t tried it, it’s probably crowning the top of your list.
Almost entirely Indica, Northern Lights cannabis is famed for producing incredibly dense and heavy buds, which are nonetheless surprisingly resistant to rot, mould and other common problems. Glistening in sticky resin and adorned with golden hairs, Lights is as beautiful to look at as it is enjoyable to smoke.
And of course, the fact that NL is pretty close to being a pure Indica means you can expect a rapid, hard-hitting and lasting sedative stone, making it great for treating anxiety, insomnia and the general stresses of everyday life.

As is the case with most legendary cannabis strains, the history of NL is somewhat vague and highly disputed. Far too many breeders and iconic cannabis connoisseurs would like to think they played a role in its development and distribution, though we’re still in the dark as to how it actually came about.
Nevertheless, it’s more than likely the very first Northern Lights strain was grown in the United States on the Pacific Coast, where unknown Thai landrace strains were combined with Afghan Kush seeds purely for experimental purposes.
After this, NL made its way over to the Netherlands, where the experimentation and engineering would continue for quite some time. Over the years, the resulting NL#5 strain that emerged was one of incredibly high potency, consistently generous yields, short flowering times and simplified cultivation in general. All in all, one of the most desirable and impressive marijuana strains ever concocted, NL#5 is the true cream of the Lights crop.

Flavour and Aroma
As you’d expect from an all-time legend, it’s pretty simple to identify NL by way of its defining characteristics. You know just by looking at the buds NL seeds produce that you’re into something special.
Dense, heavy and coated in the most beautifully crystalline trichomes, they’re less your typical cannabis flowers and more works of art in their own right.
Even before harvesting, the fragrance of the Northern Lights strain really is something else. The plants produce an aroma distinctly reminiscent of the Skunk strain that’s heavy but not overpowering, along with an unmistakable note of fresh earth and a hint of piney-citrus in the background. These sensations are intensified significantly when the buds are lit, resulting in a sweet and tangy initial flavour that’s deep, heavy and lingering on the exhale.
Despite being enormously potent and dense, the smoke is also incredibly smooth and has a ‘buttery’ quality to it. You can expect both the fragrance and the aftertaste to linger for quite some time – NL is anything but a light smoke.
What are the Effects of Northern Lights weed?
Coming in at approximately 95% Indica and 5% Sativa, you know exactly what to expect when you take a hit of top quality NL bud. Suffice to say, this isn’t the kind of marijuana strain you turn to for an energy boost, or when there’s anything you need to concentrate on.
Even just a couple of hits of these lights can be enough to bring on intense sedation from head to toe, almost always resulting in sleepiness and couch-lock. Fantastic for relaxation and as a nightcap, Lights often rubs shoulders with the other high THC strains, boasting in the mind-blowing region of 18% to 25%. Much higher than most pure Indica strains and certainly not for the faint hearted.
The stone comes on after a matter of seconds and gradually intensifies over the subsequent minutes. Contentment and euphoria often follow the initial hit of relaxation, combining complete and utter laziness with a sense of blissful tranquillity.
You won’t be able to do anything, but you won’t want to do anything, either. Famed for knocking even the most seasoned smokers well and truly off their feet, Lights has a well-earned reputation for being the definition of a “two hit and quit” weed strain. A little of the stuff goes a long way – a great value for money smoke.
Just be sure you have a solid supply of snacks on hand, as NL is also notorious for bringing on the most extreme munchies imaginable. Great for treating nausea or loss of appetite as a medical cannabis strain.
Growing Marijuana's Aurora Borealis
If it’s legal to cultivate cannabis in your jurisdiction, you’ll probably find NL one of the easiest and most merciful marijuana strains to grow.
Not only is the NL strain extremely resistant to the usual threats like mould and rot, it’s also extremely generous with comparatively little space required. Yields are consistently high and with flowering times as fast as six weeks, it’s perfectly possible to undergo multiple cycles within the same year.
The best approach to growing this remarkable cannabis strain is using the Sea Of Green method, though you’ll still produce great results with a modest indoor grow space. Temperatures should be kept in the region of 70° F to 85° F, paying close attention to air quality and humidity levels at all times. If growing outdoors, the Northern Lights strain needs warm and consistent Mediterranean-style conditions to reach its full potential.
